Amazon Market Intelligence Report

Seller ecosystem intelligence from daily marketplace monitoring

Published April 26, 2026

The Marketplace Is Vast. Power Isn't.

The instinct when looking at marketplace scale — hundreds of thousands of sellers active across hundreds of thousands of brands in our dataset — is to conclude that Amazon is anarchically competitive. That instinct is wrong. Seller count and competitive intensity are different things. The surprising number: even the most contested consumer brands in our 90-day rolling snapshot average fewer than 2.1 sellers per actively tracked product. Bath & Body Works, Hasbro, and Motorola each land between 1.49 and 1.69 sellers per ASIN. The marketplace isn't flooded with competing offers on most products — it's dominated by the same small set of operators showing up everywhere.

A Few Dozen Operators, Tens of Thousands of Brands

The defining structural fact of Amazon's third-party marketplace is operator consolidation at the top. The nine largest independent operators in our dataset each hold buy box presence across 4,000 to 7,700 distinct brands — spanning consumer electronics, home goods, sporting goods, and everything adjacent simultaneously. They aren't specialists. They're systematic. This isn't a small-seller phenomenon. These are entities running dedicated repricing infrastructure, FBA-first fulfillment pipelines, and automated catalog coverage sourced through wholesale and liquidation channels. Any brand with meaningful BSR presence has almost certainly encountered at least one of these operators — whether they recognize the seller name or not.

Breadth vs. Depth: Two Distinct Operator Strategies

A detail that aggregate seller counts hide: operators within the top tier pursue meaningfully different strategies. Some run wide and shallow — one of the largest operators by brand breadth averages under 2 ASINs per brand touched, suggesting a high-velocity, test-and-move approach across catalog breadth. Others drill deeper: a different operator in the top 10 averages more than 3 ASINs per brand, indicating systematic per-catalog penetration rather than opportunistic single listings. The implication for brands: the operator on your listings isn't interchangeable with all other multi-brand operators. Their catalog behavior — how deep they go per brand, how long they hold buy box position — tells you whether you're seeing a one-time encounter or a systematic distribution channel you'll need to manage long-term.

FBA Captures 75.5% of Buy Box Time

Across brands with meaningful buy box activity in the current 90-day window, FBA-fulfilled sellers hold the buy box an average of 75.5% of the time. That's not a split that responds primarily to price — it's a structural weighting built into how Amazon's algorithm ranks fulfillment method. Non-FBA sellers compete for roughly one quarter of available buy box rotations regardless of price parity. The practical consequence: the large cross-brand operators described above run near-100% FBA fulfillment as a matter of operational default. Their competitive advantage isn't product sourcing or pricing alone — it's fulfillment architecture that ensures algorithmic priority before pricing even becomes relevant. Brands evaluating their own FBA strategy should treat the 75.5% figure as the baseline, not an outlier.

The Data Amazon Doesn't Surface

Amazon's native Brand Analytics shows who's winning your buy box today. It doesn't show that the same seller holds buy box positions across 5,000 other brands, or that their pricing behavior on adjacent categories correlates with their activity on yours. The operator network is invisible from the brand's vantage point inside Seller Central. That cross-brand view is what Webotee's dataset is built around. Operator profiles, historical buy box tenure by ASIN, brand footprint breadth, and sourcing pattern signals — all derived from 16 months of daily monitoring across the BSR top-1M. If the aggregate picture in this report is directionally useful, the seller-level detail behind a subscription is where the actionable intelligence lives.
