Amazon Sports & Outdoors: Brand & Seller Landscape
Seller ecosystem intelligence from daily marketplace monitoring
Category Snapshot
Sports & Outdoors is one of Amazon's most expansive and fiercely contested categories — our proprietary dataset tracks 25,101 brands across 80,488 primary-category products. The category is projected to sustain double-digit growth through 2026, building on a 2024 baseline of roughly $32 billion in annual sales and an 11% year-over-year trajectory driven by at-home fitness, outdoor recreation, and gear-adjacent lifestyle trends. Seller competition density averages 0.23 competing sellers per product across the category, a figure that masks significant polarization: dominant apparel and performance brands attract hundreds of resellers per SKU while niche equipment labels see little grey-market pressure at all. That spread is exactly where brand intelligence becomes actionable.
Top Brands by Seller Competition
Nike leads all named brands with 660 competing sellers observed across 3,129 products in the past three months — a reflection of its ubiquity across athletic apparel sub-niches and the depth of its authorized dealer network, which still leaves room for grey-market listings. Its control score of 63.9 puts it in moderate-risk territory. adidas runs a close second at 498 sellers spread across 7,661 products, producing a notably low sellers-per-product ratio; its wide catalog dilutes pressure per SKU even as total exposure is high (control score 53.2). Under Armour and 3M round out the high-volume tier — both carry elevated product counts and control scores in the low-to-mid 50s, suggesting meaningful but not overwhelming reseller activity. Milwaukee stands out for a different reason: 306 sellers on just 1,115 products yields a high sellers-per-product concentration, with a control score of 67.0 — indicating that when its products appear in Sports & Outdoors contexts, competition for the buybox is intense. Samsung's presence in the category (241 sellers, control score 63.7) reflects cross-category electronics products — wearables, GPS devices, and action cameras — that compete directly in this root category.
